Does the Sharp-Money Playbook Cross Sports? A Live WNBA Experiment.

The whole system rests on one idea: the gap between where the tickets go and where the money goes. That read built a baseball record. The obvious question — does it cross to another sport? — is exactly the kind of thing this site exists to test honestly, so we pointed the machinery at the WNBA and let the data answer.

The setup

We token-replayed Action Network's public-betting feed for the WNBA and loaded 129 completed games (May 12 – June 28): closing moneyline, spread and total, plus the bet% / money% split on each — and, once we found it, the opening line too (more on that below). Then we ran a signal hunt twice, independently: once ourselves, and once with an outside model handed the same file and the same rigor checklist, so the two results could be compared rather than trusted.

What both passes found

The WNBA market is mostly efficient — and "follow the sharp money" is, if anything, backwards here. Base rates: the dog wins outright ~32%, covers the spread ~53%, games go over ~54%. When we cut by money-vs-bets divergence, the side the money piled onto under-performed — the opposite of the baseball read. Both passes landed in the same place, which is the most reassuring kind of agreement: not "we found an edge," but "we both found the same nothing."

One candidate survived, and only one. When the public/recreational money floods the underdog (dog moneyline money% − bet% ≥ 15), back the favorite to win. In-sample the favorite went 42-12, with a positive return in both halves of a train/test split — the test that has killed most of our ideas. The honest caveats are loud: it's a small sample (n=37–54), we tested many cuts, and a thing that survives one split can still be noise. It is a hypothesis, not a rule.

The better theory — and the opening line hiding in the data

The stronger idea is reverse line movement: when the line moves toward the side the money is on, against the public's tickets. To test it you need the opening number, which the feed appeared not to carry — until we found the opener sitting in a secondary book inside the same payload. With open-and-close on every game, we tested it properly. The verdict: also null. Following the move covered ~50% at every move size; "confirmation" by the money didn't help. The one 63%-ish cell was nineteen games with an unstable split. We wrote it down as not-proven and kept the data collection running, because the forward sample is the only thing that can ever change that answer.

What we're doing about it — the forward test, and why we stopped paying for it

We didn't get to believe the one candidate, so we bought the answer the cheap way: $5 a game on the favorite moneyline whenever the fade-the-dog-money trigger fired, placed before tip, graded in public. Heavy favorites pay almost nothing, so this is a high-hit-rate / low-reward bet whose entire question is whether the win rate holds out of sample.

On 2026-08-04 we cut off the money. The reason is the most useful thing this experiment has produced: the trigger went 5-3 — a 62.5% hit rate, right about what the backtest promised — and still lost $7.49. That's the arithmetic of chalk. We were paying 57¢ to 84¢ for these favorites, so a win returned between $0.75 and $2.69 while every loss cost the full $5. At the prices we actually paid, the break-even hit rate is 67.8% — and 62.5% is not evidence of clearing it. A win rate that looks right and a P&L that's red is the signature of a real pattern with no edge left in it after the price.

So the daemon keeps running in monitor-only mode: it still evaluates every slate, still resolves the market, still records the leg at the real ask before tip — it just doesn't buy anything. If the win rate ever climbs to where the prices we pay would actually be profitable, the paper ledger will show it, and it will have cost nothing to find out. Real-money record, closed: 5-3, −$7.49. Since then, 5-1 on paper (+$5.90 had it been bet). A handful of games is not evidence either way — it's the first few data points of a sample we'll let run for the rest of the season, now at no cost, before we conclude anything.

Holdout law, same as always: the candidate was found in-sample, so the live games are the test, not a victory lap. We also keep every intraday snapshot now (open→close movement on every game) so the reverse-line theory keeps accumulating a forward sample too. Nothing here is betting advice — it's a research log, and the conclusion is "not yet." One note on venue: Polymarket's WNBA game markets are too thin to host the kind of six-figure "sharp" fills we track in baseball and the World Cup, so this experiment lives on the betting-split read, not on-chain whales.
